Once your application is approved, our team will assist with getting you enrolled in one of our approved CDL training partner schools conveniently located across the country.

Earn Your CDL-A and Get Hired

Complete your training program and obtain your CDL-A license. If eligible, you will need to complete a U.S. Xpress driver orientation, pass a physical and a drug test before being hired.

Continue Your Training

After you get your CDL and are hired, you’ll complete additional driver training with U.S. Xpress to gain additional real-world experience and build your confidence on the road.

Upgrade to Solo Driver

Once you’ve completed your training requirements, you’ll be eligible to become a solo or team U.S. Xpress driver and begin your career.

Depending on the program, eligible students may receive assistance with: • Tuition • Hotel accommodations • Transportation In most cases, participants agree to drive for U.S. Xpress for a set amount of time* after obtaining their CDL.

How much can I expect to earn in my first year as a U.S. Xpress driver?

First-year drivers at U.S. Xpress earn an average of $57,500, with opportunities to earn more as they grow their careers at U.S. Xpress.

How much does CDL school cost through one of the U.S. Xpress partner schools?

Tuition through our partner CDL schools is $5,200 and housing is available while attending the course for an additional $1,500 if needed. Most students attend CDL school through our program at no up-front cost to them. Talk to a recruiter to learn more.

Does U.S. Xpress offer scholarships to cover the cost of CDL school tuition?

Yes. The following scholarships are available to those who qualify:

Team Agreement: This program covers the cost of tuition for CDL school after the recipient completes 90,000 miles or 6 consecutive months as a team driver. This scholarship applies to familial teams only.

Military Scholarship: Covers the cost of tuition and applicable housing costs if the student remains employed as a U.S. Xpress company driver for at least 12 consecutive months or reaches 100,000 miles as a solo driver or 200,000 miles as a team driver.

First Responders Scholarship: Covers the cost of tuition and applicable housing costs is the student remains employees as a U.S. Xpress company driver for at least 12 consecutive months or reaches 100,000 miles as a solo driver or 200,000 miles as a team driver.

What happens after I complete CDL school?

After successfully completing CDL school, and obtaining your CDL-A license, you will need to complete driver orientation with U.S. Xpress, pass a drug test and a physical. Once you get your CDL and are hired, you will hit the road with a driver trainer. This additional training helps you develop the skills and experience needed to become a truck driver before upgrading to a solo driving position.

What is a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)?

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a specialized driver’s license required to legally operate large, heavy, or hazardous vehicles in the United States. This includes vehicles like semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, dump trucks, passenger buses, and vehicles transporting hazardous materials.

What are the different types of Commercial Driver’s Licenses?

There are three types of CDLs. Class A CDL: A Class A license allows you to operate vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, including a towed unit weighing over 10,000 pounds. This is the type of CDL that you’ll get when attending one of our partner schools. This includes:
  • Flatbed trucks
  • Livestock carriers
  • Tanker trucks
  • Tractor-trailers
Class B CDL: These licenses allow you to operate a single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, or any vehicle towing a trailer that doesn’t exceed 10,000 pounds. Examples include:
  • Busses
  • Dump trucks
  • Straight trucks
Class C CDL: A Class C CDL is required to operate smaller vehicles that don’t meet Class A or B weight requirements, but can transport 16 or more passengers, or hazardous materials that require warning placards (hazmat). These vehicles include:
  • Passenger vans
  • Small hazmat vehicles
  • Box trucks with specific endorsements

What are the basic requirements for getting a CDL?

  • Meet all requirements in your state of residence to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit.
  • You must be 21 or older.
  • You must pass a DOT Medical Examination and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Complete Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) and pass a knowledge & skills test.
