Driver trainers help the next generation of safe professional drivers. When you were a new driver, someone took the time to show you the ropes and helped develop the skills that make you a safe driver. Now it’s your turn, and you’ll earn some extra cash while you’re at it. You’ll be paired with a student to help ensure they have the skills they need to upgrade to a first seat driver. We’re accepting driver trainer applications for both OTR and Dedicated drivers.

When you help the next generation of professional drivers get rolling, you have priority access to freight and can expect an average up to 2,500 miles per week.
Eligibility
- Experience: You must have at least 12 months safe driving experience.
- Tenure: You must be employed with U.S. Xpress for at least 30 days.
- Standing: You must be in good standing with the company.
- Safety: You must have and maintain a great safety record.
Pay
- Earn more. Our full-time driver trainers can earn up to $20,000 more per year than non-trainers.
- $250 per week when a student is seated on your truck.
- Up to an additional $1,000 in bonuses once your student upgrades.
- With priority access to freight, driver trainers can expect average 2,500 miles per week.

What is student training?
Students are drivers hired with less than three months of driving experience. They are paired with a qualified driver trainer to receive additional training to ensure they meet our safety and skills requirements. Driver trainers will host a student driver on their truck while the student completes curriculum and ultimately signs off when the student is ready to upgrade to a first seat driver.
What is a driver trainer?
Driver trainers at U.S. Xpress are experienced and knowledgeable drivers who coach our incoming student drivers. Drivers must have a minimum of 12 months of total driving experience and be employed by U.S. Xpress for at least 30 days to be eligible to become a driver trainer. They must also maintain a great safety record and be in good standing with their operations team.
What is the compensation?
Driver trainers will earn an extra $250 per week when a student is seated on their truck. The driver trainer will also be eligible for up to $1,000 in bonuses based on the performance and retention of their student for the first four months following their upgrade to first seat driver.

How do I become a driver trainer?
Complete the interest form on the driver trainer website. If you’re qualified, your supervisor will apply on your behalf. Once approved, you will be scheduled to attend a two-day T3 class at one of the U.S. Xpress terminals. You will be eligible to receive your first student after you complete the class.
What are the expectations and responsibilities?
We expect that you are with your student for the entirety of their training. You will need to work with your supervisor to proactively schedule hometime to balance your needs with those of your student. We hold our driver trainers to a high standard and expect the same of our student drivers.
Who will support me if I need help?
Your supervisor will be able to assist with the day-to-day driving responsibilities that relate to your student. For anything related to your student getting on and off the truck or progressing toward upgrade, the Professional Driver Onboarding team will be available. Driver trainers and students will be assigned a Professional Driver Onboarding advisor who will do periodic check-ins and be able to assist as needed. Remember, most issues can be solved with a quick call to your supervisor.
